Nevada Car Insurance

If you are a resident of Nevada, car insurance is probably something that you will not be able to get away without having in place. If you are caught driving without auto insurance in Nevada, you may be subject to penalties or fines. In addition, failure to have auto insurance in place in NV may mean that you will lose your driving privileges altogether. Of course, it just makes sense to have a policy in place to protect your health and finances in the event of an accident.

Nevada Car Insurance: Tracking Vehicles

The state does a very good job of keeping on top of those who may not be properly insured. Officials are aware of which vehicles have changed hands and whether a person’s auto insurance is up for renewal.

A modern computer system has been put in place to track auto insurance coverage in the state. The software is sophisticated enough to alert officials when a previously-insured driver’s policy has been cancelled or was not renewed.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will follow up in these situations to ensure that the owner of the vehicle in question has arranged for adequate car insurance.

Nevada Auto Insurance: How The Insurance Verification Program Works

All car insurance companies operating in Nevada are required to tell the DMV about any new policies they have issued and whether they have cancelled any policies during the previous 30 days. They are required to provide the owner/driver’s name, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and the date that coverage changed or was terminated.

If your name comes up under this system, you will be sent a letter from the DMV asking you to confirm that you have auto insurance in place. You have the option of responding in writing or providing this information on the DMV web site using a code you will be provided.

Once the DMV receives your answer, staff members will check with your insurance company to make sure the information is correct. If you provide false information or do not respond within the 20 days allotted for you to provide an answer, your license will be suspended immediately. You will be notified of the suspension and you will be given the opportunity to provide more information to have the decision reversed. Otherwise, you will be asked to turn your plates in to the DMV.

Nevada Auto Insurance: Liability Coverage

Under Nevada state law, drivers are required to carry liability insurance. The minimum amounts are as follows:

  1. $15,000 for causing injuries or death to one individual as the result of an accident
  2. $30,000 for causing injuries or death to two (or more) individuals as the result of an accident
  3. $10,000 for damage to property as the result of an accident

Liability insurance is the only type of coverage that Nevada drivers are legally required to carry. Please note that the mandatory limits only refer to the minimum amount you are required to buy. This may not be enough coverage for your needs, and your insurance company or independent insurance agent will be able to help you determine the right level of insurance coverage for your needs.

Liability insurance is put in place to pay for damages to an injured person or to compensate a family for the death of a person where you are the “at fault” driver. Damages that an injured person may have incurred include the following:

  1. Medical Expenses
  2. General Damages for Pain and Suffering
  3. Compensation for Lost Wages as the Result of an Accident

The liability insurance does not cover you or any passengers in your vehicle who may become injured as the result of an accident. To protect yourself and your loved ones, you may want to buy insurance that will pay benefits to you and/or your passengers in case of accident.

You will want to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of your liability insurance before you make the commitment to buy a policy. Rates for the same level of coverage will vary depending on the insurance company involved. Comparing policies from several companies will help you make a wise choice for coverage.
